WHY ORGANIZE A CHAPTER OF NAPH ?
brenda writes "First, all of us know many physically challenged persons who, through no fault of their own, are not living very full or productive lives. Many of those people lack the physical stamina and know-how to seek and hold a job in the competitive labor market. They need the knowledge that they are entitled to education, rehabilitation and encouragement. Sometimes they only need a little knowledge to obtain the things that will help them with that productivity.
There is much that needs to be done for and by the physically challenged. We feel that group action in the name of a national organization has an important place in every community. We believe that, the adult physically challenged person who is seeking an outlet for his/her desire to be of service to his/her fellow physically challenged and to his/her community, will find his/her opportunity, within the broad organizational structure of NAPH.
Much of NAPH’s program is carried on at the local chapter level. To this end we are seeking to expand our membership and chapters by encouraging the formation of local groups (chapters) in communities where we are not now represented.
We are well aware of all the good programs now in effect in the interest of the physically challenged. We are aware that many physically challenged persons have made outstanding contributions to their families, their communities and to the economic and social welfare of the nation.
We want the good things in life for more of our physically challenged citizens. There is a great potential for progress among our millions of unorganized physically challenged. Not nearly all of our severely physically challenged are being served by existing agencies as the language of our laws would indicate that they have a right to expect. We do not claim to have the funds to assist, but through organizing can cause recognition to the needs to happen more readily.
NAPH does not imply that our organization will fill the gaps at this time. We offer an opportunity for the physically challenged people to organize and promote needed reforms. Each community has a variety of needs for the physically challenged, and each of our chapters have it’s own agenda for local problems and work nationally for other problems and agendas.
Whether we like it or not, we should accept the reality of the fact that the hardcore of the unrehabilitated and the unemployed are to be moved onto the production line, action must come largely through government at all levels. Reforms which will change conditions will come through legislative action such as the A.D.A. To influence legislative bodies, you must create public opinion which is the basis of political pressure, and that is about the only pressure that is recognized by government bodies, local, state or national.
NAPH is ready to lease, under certain conditions, our name, our broad program, any prestige we may have developed, a place in our growing family of chapters. To lease to groups who indicate a serious desire to become a part of a national movement to convince physically challenged persons that they must provide the leadership to seek equitable opportunities for the physically challenged. To create a more favorable public and employer attitude towards hiring of qualified physically challenged workers. There has to be a local agency to police those that ignore the A.D.A.
Membership in NAPH offers a challenging opportunity for the aggressive self-starter to join a growing organization of and for the physically challenged. It offers encouragement to those of the challenged community who need our help and counsel. It offers full membership to our non-challenged relatives, friends and co-workers.
We hope you will join the people who have found membership in NAPH to be stimulating and helpful. "

BILL OF RIGHTS FOR THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED
brenda writes " PREAMBLE:
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness together with the freedom guaranteed by the Bill of Rights of the United States of America are somewhat empty phrases of thousands of physically challenged citizens who, by reason of their disabilities, do not enjoy opportunity equally with their fellow citizens. In an attempt to evaluate the position of the physically challenged adult, it is necessary to state that while his/her physical limitations impose some restrictions on his/her activities in varying degrees, he/she is and will remain a human being, living in a free society. He/she is created with and endowed with certain rights and privileges, and must also assume, insofar as possible, certain responsibilities and obligations. Life is worthwhile only when we learn to give and to receive -- when we make full use of our rights and also fulfill our duties. Therefore, be it resolved that the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF THE PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED, INC. does adopt and implement this BILL OF RIGHTS. 1. The right to the earliest possible diagnosis of and treatment for our disabilities or injuries to aid in achieving a maximum recovery. 2. The right to an adequate public education. 3. The right to an adequate training or retraining for a vocation in which the individual's physical capacities and his/her aptitudes can be most productive and in which the individual finds satisfaction. 4. The right to seek employment in fields of our own choosing on an equal basis with those similarly qualified. 5. The right to equal pay for equal work. 6. The right to the elimination of architectural barriers to provide an accessible entrance to public buildings, spiritual, educational, cultural, and recreational buildings and other areas, such as parks, campsites, beaches, and marinas, used by the general public as a place of gathering or amusement, so that the physically challenged may discharge their duties as citizens and fulfill their desires socially. 7. The right to use public transportation (air, buses, rapid transit, trains) through the development of barrier free design conveyances. 8. The right to purchase life, accident, and hospitalization (health) insurance at normal rates. 9. The right to purchase automobile insurance at normal rates unless the driver has been proven to be a bad risk. l0. The right to housing and custodial care that meets lawful standards and includes opportunities to exercise one’s intellect. 11. The right to accessible facilities in the area of Civil Defense. 12. The right to proper legal safeguards. 13. The right to have physically challenged persons and the organized physically challenged as participants in any group making decisions affecting their lives. Adopted July, 1964, Detroit Revised July, 1971, Cincinnati Revised July, 1972, Charleston Terminology updated 11/30/02 "

BRIEF OVERLOOK OF NAPH
brenda writes "NAPH is an organization of physically challenged and non-challenged adults trying to bring about awareness of the needs of the physically challenged community. The information below will explain the goals and purpose of the NAPH Organization.
To give you a brief look at the NAPH Organization – NAPH is an organization trying to make the public aware of the needs of the physically challenged, and supports Legislation to benefit the physically challenged community in areas such as employment, housing, transportation, a barrier free society, etc. The Purpose of NAPH is to “Advance the Social, Economic and Physical Welfare of the physically challenged community in the United States of America”. To be eligible for membership, persons need to be adult citizens of the U.S. and over 18 years of age. Persons joining under the age of 18 are known as “Junior Members”, and have no voting rights. Membership consists of belonging to a Chapter or joining as a member-at-large (MAL). 60% of the governing body must be physically challenged. Membership MUST be individual, no group or organizations.
A Membership-At-Large is primarily for persons interested in joining NAPH, in locations where no chapters are in existence at this time. Membership Dues are $10.00 per year. A MAL is entitled to receive all NAPH mailings sent to the membership, NAPH NATIONAL NEWSLETTER ( NNN ), Calls to meetings and conventions, and any mailing concerning betterment of the physically challenged community. Each summer NAPH holds a National Convention, hosted by chapters in their community. If interested in more information regarding the next convention, check out our web page, NAPH.NET.
NAPH is supported mainly by Membership Dues and Donations, and is operated by its members and Officers. It was founded in 1958, incorporated in the State of Michigan. The largest percentage of chapters are located in Michigan. We have chapters in California and Ohio, and Members-at-large all over the U.S. as well. Our Membership & Organizational committee is working on promotions to form more new chapters in other locations. NAPH is always anxious to start new chapters. Membership is open to any person, physically challenged or not, who is interested in the advancement of the physically challenged community. NAPH is the only National Organization with membership open to all types disabilities, invisible as well as visible challenges, including blind and deaf. NAPH is a non-profit, working organization. It is a voluntary, independent, self-help action group. The activities range from social, to legislation (as mentioned above), to encouraging conditions for employment of the physically challenged. Other committees include Membership, Transportation, Housing, Awards, Ways and Means, etc. One of our biggest projects has been called Barrier free design, then rolled into promoting the A.D.A. (Americans with Disabilities Act), and now promoting Visitability. NAPH publishes a Newsletter, THE NNN, three times per year.
Respectfully,
Helen Lee Roudebush Administrative Assistant, NAPH, Inc."

HEALTH CARE
brenda writes "Hello to all of my Naphers and Friends, I know all of you will not agree with this information but I feel this is very important that we all keep an open mind in this matter. Kathleen is a member of my chapter with no family. Her helper Anne has been let go.
Kathleen has already been told Anne has been let go along with a lot of others and there are going to be many changes and cut backs. She is receiving a list next week. You should be receiving the same information soon. In order to stay out here and be independent it’s going to be a new game with new rules and those who can not accept that are going to lose their freedom. I tell you this not to scare you but to make you see how very fortunate you are for all the care you receive. We have had done so much for so long that you have come to think that its supposed to be this way and you know better...for all of us...for the way of life we have known for so long it is coming to an end. We now enter into a struggle against the evil we have for so long in our life heard about but only saw the edges of it. Unless we fight and fight hard against what is happening all in the name of for the common good our life as we know it is over.
You will be told you are a hate monger...you hate blacks...you don't care about other people...you will be belittled...anything it takes for these people to get their way and turn our country from one of freedom to slavery. You now are in a position to help spread this message and need to have as many of the answers as you can to the people who do not see what is happening for what it really is. You have seen the days when people with disabilities were told you are not welcome here. Leave. You have now seen the days where all the struggles made society understand the value of all human beings. That is being changed now and unless many push back it will be the death of many. Many times in our history we have seen this same thing happen and happen in just the same way as it is now happening in America. Use your time and energy to educate those who can not see what this is actually about. You have not lived all these years and had all these experiences for no reason nor did God give you the life He did to waste worrying about stuff that has no value. I, as President of NAPH Michigan Area, need to get this whole organization on board as to what is happening in our country and what it means to people with disabilities and seniors. This so called health care bill can not pass in any form or it is the end of life as we know it for many, many people. I myself don't care as I have no intention of taking the drugs or anything else this government has to offer but there are many who are dependent now on the many services offered and without them can not remain independent.
I feel the need to try to make you understand that this is where this so called health care bill is going. It is going to limit services to people based on age and condition. We have people 80 or more years old able to live independent due to the fact if they break their hip they have surgery and are able in a few days to begin therapy and walk again. It used to be you broke a hip, you laid in bed until it healed. It never healed correctly and people died from pneumonia, bed sores, etc., never able to walk again. Same thing with knee replacements. No matter if we believe in these procedures or not at least they are there available for those who want them. That is all going to change.
This health care bill is not about helping people, it is about limiting care to those this administration deems as less than valuable life..non tax payers. They intend to help those who can work and pay into the system to keep the elite going. The first question to be asked is "will those in power live by this same system and the answer is no". They will, with our tax dollars, continue to have choices of the best doctors and the best care while the rest of us are offered government care which consists of someone in government deciding for your doctor what he can do to help you. Unless all in Washington live by this same system, the answer is no ...and no and no.
As you see for the first time there will be no cost of living increase in Social Security yet all costs have risen and will continue to rise. These people care more about saving polar bears and some small fish in California then they do human beings and they use our money to do it. We have people now advising the president that animals should have attorneys and be able to sue people. We have people stating that it is not the right of human beings to decide how many children they can have. That needs to be determined by people in power. If the American people do not wake up and see what this is really about we are gong to be slaves to the elite who use the cover of caring to ensnare and entrap for their own glory. Last of all speak of God and demonstrate His power and glory every opportunity you have. It is only in the end that we will be saved from ourselves by our Creator. Do not be swayed into this separation of state and religion. This is a country founded on Christian principals not any one religion. We first believe we were created by God and He gave us our freedoms and abilities, not this government. Mention our Creator in all ways possible and often...that 14 percent that feels uncomfortable in hearing about a power larger than man is totally free to leave the room. If man is dumb enough to think he is the largest power in this Universe and he created himself, why are any of us respecting that stupidity? If man is the highest power and there is no other, then we are as a people in so much trouble and lost to all hope.
Many years some of us [ I as one fought for many things ] Not to have them taken away by this... SO MI AREA AND NATIONAL NAPH AND FRIENDS.. PLEASE JOIN ME IN THIS CRUCIAL FIGHT IF YOU BELIEVE IT IS WORTH THE FIGHT. Sincerely, MI Area Naph President, Gerri Meadows - Franklin

mal writes "When I moved here I was atracted by the rent control in government housing. Never considered the door width of the doors until I delveloped gait ataxcia and had to use a seat type walker. This happened 2 months after I moved here. suddenly I was so gratful I lived here, adjusting to no balnce was bad' enough but at least I could move freely through the rooms of Friendship Manor near Frandor off Michigan, Lansing.Mi. It just goes to show one never knows when one is going to need that kind of accesibility and that it is important for all not just the elderly. Also thank God for Spectran our special mobility local lift eqipped bus service, door to door. I was already using it because of photophobia which prevents me from driveing, but needed even more once I lost my balance. My sister who is a counselor, once told me we are all TEP meaning today we may be able bodied, but that can dfisappear tomorrow. Now I truly understand what that means. TEP means temporarily enemabled persons. Thank you for your time. I din,t know about the Community Chioce Act until I read the article here I will contact Debbie Stabalow immediately on her stand on this bill. Thanks for a great site. sincerely mal"

FIFTH VICE PRESIDENT REPORT
brenda writes "For those of you who didn’t know, about a month before convention, my dear friend, Fred, was hospitalized. He was in ICU for ten days and in the hospital for a total of three weeks. I then had to stay with him at home for another ten days. I got home just in time to get ready for my trip.
I was so happy to be with all of you. I missed you during the MI Area Convention and thought of all of you often that week end. Again, I want to thank the Saginaw chapter for helping me with my expenses to convention. It is greatly appreciated. Well, I’m back down towards the bottom of the ladder, but want to thank you for making me Fifth V.P., a safe place to be. I checked the web page. I noticed even though we have not updated the page since January, we are still getting many hits. I would like to encourage those of you who have access to the internet to send me any information concerning the disabled community. I have noticed the public is most interested in issues such as legislative news, where to get help in different areas, and who can provide services for their needs.
I want to thank Albert and Brenda for helping me this year with the web page. I regret to report that due to illness in my nephew’s family, he was unable to assist us lately. He spent the last few months at his daughter’s bed side while she fought a losing battle with cancer.
Once again I want to thank the Saginaw Chapter for helping me come to convention. Without their help, I couldn’t have made the trip. I look forward to seeing you all at the fiftieth. I hear it is going to be one you won’t want to miss.
Bernadette Travis "

EMPLOY THE HANDICAPPED
brenda writes "I was reading an article the other day which stated that for 1000 employers who tapped into Job Accommodations Network----49% of the cases required little or no changes in equipment used by the disabled workers. Some small changes were made like putting the copier in their room, replacing the telephone with a headset, electric pencil sharpeners, and staplers etc. These changes at small costs allow the disabled person to return to their old job and enable the employer to keep a valued employee. In addition, it would save time and keep production up by not having to train a new employee.
More information can be had on Job Accommodation Network or jan.wvu.edu Donna Brotzman "

brenda writes "The Access Team has been very busy performing facility assessments for the City of Muskegon. The team accomplished the assessment of 33 parks and recreation facilities. The city will be determining if funds are available to make these sites more accessible to persons with disabilities. The Access Team will do more assessments in the near future. The team is becoming very popular and needs to recruit more members. This Access Team is part of the Disability Connection CIL. Karen Wynne is the Accessibility Specialist of the CIL and is the chairperson of this committee. I am a member of this team and also on the Board of Directors of the Disability Connection CIL.
