Message: This is an e-mail I had send Notre Dame, which you should take a look at:
This past weekend, my family and I visited Notre Dame for the football game against Pittsburgh. My mother, who has medical problems with her leg, has a handicap sticker permitting her to park near the Notre Dame Stadium. When we arrived on campus, we were directed not to park in the normal handicap spaces, but in general parking almost a mile away from the stadium. They assured us a shuttle would take us to and from the game.
We stood their in disbelief, questioning why your university would move the handicapped Notre Dame fans, parents, and students from parking within a close vicinity of the stadium. We noticed the Notre Dame 1942 Alumni had taken over the entire handicapped parking only to use half of it. Why did this happen? Why were we moved?
Then we realized it: money. Handicapped people do not contribute any money into your university, thus we are treated as inferior to an alumni who do. I assumed that your university got together and discussed the prime parking was taking by non-paying, handicapped fans who can be moved without a thought. But the problem is most handicapped people need that close parking for easy access into the stadium without having to get on a crowed bus. This limits this handicapped people from touring the campus, visiting the book store, or eating steak sandwiches.
Now, I am studying these actions at my university. It is called oppression. The oppression of handicapped people has never been taken lightly in society, which is why I‘ve forwarded a copy of this e-mail to National Association of the Physically Handicapped. Handicapped people have already been treated as “different“, thus living their entire lives as substandard only to find their favorite university is no different. You oppressed my family this weekend and it is sad your focus is more on money and not on tradition, something I thought Notre Dame had.
Thank you for your time.
